11 Hair Care Essentials For Any Hairstyle

It doesn't matter what hairstyle you've adopted, these are the hair tools that will keep your mane healthy and lustrous.

I've grown healthy, shiny, mid-back-length hair over the past couple of years, and my goal is for my hair to reach my tailbone. My secrets to accomplishing this have been (a) a less is more hair care routine and (b) investing in high quality hair essentials.

Your hair is like a weed: leave it alone and it'll grow rapidly. Refrain from too many chemicals and use of poor hair tools that are damaging, especially to the scalp and ends. I go at least a week between washes to give my strands a break. I also use a selection of prestige products and tools, which have significantly upgraded my haircare routine.

No matter what hairstyle you've adopted, one or more of these products can help you achieve or retain healthy hair. Our site may earn a small affiliate commission if you choose to indulge in any of these products.

Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector

This popular hair treatment repairs and strengthens damaged hair. It works by re-linking broken disulfide bonds in the hair, which can be damaged due to chemical treatments, heat styling, and environmental factors.

I use it every other wash and it has been a game-changer for preventing or reversing split ends and flyaways as the result of breakage.

Olaplex No. 8 Moisture Mask

I use this specialized hair treatment as needed to provide intense hydration when my hair seems dry or brittle. If I'm traveling to a humid climate, it also helps reduce frizz. The overall result is smoother, shinier, more manageable hair.

Ouai Thick Hair Shampoo

Ouai has a range of products for different hair types. I use this version of their shampoo because I have thick, curly, and somewhat coarse hair. I find most shampoos to be drying, but this rich formula cleanses and hydrates.

Ouai Thick Hair Conditioner

Again, I use the conditioner designed for thick and coarse hair types (they also have formulas for thin and medium textured hair). My hair feels so soft and nourished after using it. It has the dual benefit of being a fabulous detangler.

Oribe Gold Lust Hair Oil

This luxurious product is lightweight and derived from a beautiful blend of hair oils. You can use it at any step of your routine, on wet or dry hair. It's my staple for achieving "glass skin" but for hair, and not greasy but soft and shiny.

Oribe Luxury Molding Paste

Another luxury staple is this pliable paste that provides texture and hold for various hair styles. Because I have curly hair that I straighten, I use it to relax unruly edges. It's also perfect for when I want to prolong the time between washes, and do a sleek ponytail for a couple of days.

Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer

This iconic hair dryer is the best I've ever used. It gets my thick hair dry in just a few minutes while minimizing heat damage. I like that it is relatively quiet, lightweight and ergonomical, and comes with different attachments. The temperature and air flow settings are simple, but offer enough customization to work for all hair types.

Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler

Another cult favorite is this versatile styler that offers multiple functions in one. I'm still experimenting with the features, but love that it can create soft waves or curls for more diverse hairstyle options. All of this with intelligent heat control to minimize damage.

ghd Platinum+ Ceramic Flat Iron

This flatiron took my hair to the next level. It features technology that evens heat distribution, which helps prevent heat damage. A plus that it has ceramic plates that provide a smooth glide and a consistent temperature of 365°F for optimal styling results. It looks like I've just walked out of a salon when I use them.

Crown Affair Comb No. 002

I use this chic tortoiseshell comb because it's wide tooth, has rounded tips that won't snag, and a sturdy handle. It's great for gently working through tangles without causing breakage. I also have the compact size No. 001 for on-the-go use.

Crown Affair Hair Clips

I love pretty hair accessories and keep a small assortment for when I want to change up my hairstyle. These cute clips were handcrafted in France, and are classic enough to go with most outfits.
