Why You Should Celebrate Life

In our quest for bigger and better, it's easy to forget to celebrate life and what we've already achieved and acquired. While fixated on the future, we forget how far we've come from the past.

I am very forward-looking. In fact, I'm so future-oriented that my mind seems to have little additional capacity for past memories. I don't spend much time reflecting on what was and can easily forget past events. I don't think I truly know what nostalgia feels like because I hardly ever yearn for long-gone moments.

Yet the lack of contemplation about where I've been can make it difficult to decide where to go. Sometimes I treat life like a series of checklists, marking off goals and then rapidly moving on to the next. However, this transactional way of living led me to an impasse. It dawned on me that I can't move forward if I don't survey the past and savor the present.

I'm starting to remind myself not to forget to have gratitude for the milestones I've reached and express appreciation for what I've already accomplished. The best may be yet to come, but all who I am at this point is due to my journey and the experiences that have shaped me.

Life is a journey not a destination. — Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you are like me, you may have a restless spirit that constantly wonders "what's next?". There's nothing wrong with charting your path, but also take time to celebrate how far you've come. Yes, a full-fledged celebratory event is acceptable so feel free to put on your sequin dress, adorn yourself in diamonds, and pop open that special bottle of bubbles.

Because whatever has happened in your life up until now, whether good or bad, has taught you powerful lessons and equipped you with the knowledge to create the change you desire. Your failures and successes should be equally praised for offering insights into how the world works, and how you can thrive within it.
